"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest-a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty."

About me

Me in Austria

My pinwall

First of all I would like to welcome you to my virtual gallery! Feel free to look around and enjoy the paintings and cartoons.

My name is Dimitrij Marufow, I was born in 1971 and together with my dear wife Irina live in the lovely city of Hamburg in North-Germany. I work as an interpreter and translator.

Since early childhood (probably since I could hold a pen) I liked to draw. It's one of the things that I seem to do well and really enjoy doing. Yet somehow I've never studied art – although I never gave it up either. But it was always a hobby and I learned from books and by doing. Drawing and painting were my constant companions, who never really left my side. I also feel that it is a perpetual learning process, never really standing still and always picking up something new and improving along the way.

Recently I got interested in board games and found this very interesting melting pot of a site called Board Game Geek. During some of the discussions in one of the diverse forums on BGG I started to do quick pencil drawn “visual responses” - small cartoons. People responded very positively and demanded more. Gradually I began doing inked versions of caricatures and now do them in colour.

I don't exactly know where all of this is leading, but I know that I enjoy making these caricatures very much. What I also love about this recent “development” is the fact that it “evolved” in a very natural way. Before that time I've usually painted or drawn when I felt like it, for its own sake so to say and for no one in particular. Now I've found out that there are people who like what I do and I feel that it stimulates me to do more.

Of course I wouldn't mind if in the end it would softly (in the optimal case) phase me into doing illustrations and/or cartoons on a more professional basis.

I have tons of ideas and will work hard to keep this place fresh, interesting and spiced up with a good portion of humour!

There's also a forum here and I would like to invite you to register there and share your thoughts, make suggestions take part in discussions – I find that the feedback of the “audience” is a very important factor that keeps me going.

I hope you enjoy your stay in this little virtual space!

Yours sincerely

Dimitrij Marufow.
